How to build an effective computer based learning module
Audience Analysis
The second step in the Instructional Design process is to find out more information from the hospital educators who are/will be, in this instance, the learners. An online survey (see here>>) was developed and sent to sixty educators who attend the hospital education council monthly meeting. The survey tool used was SurveyMonkey and the survey link was sent via email. Educators had a week to respond to the survey. The response rate was 68%. The feedback received help gain a deeper understanding of the audience goals. The audience demographics revealed that most educators are juggling several roles and responsibilities. Fifty percent of them had already a knowledge on how to create a computer based learning (CBL) module from research to development, meanwhile the rest didn't have any experience. In addition, survey participants expressed the desire to find out more information on teaching methods and technical tools to enhance the course material and make it more effective.

Overall, the audience analysis revealed that:
- Educators were divided in two between the ones who had experience in developing a computer based learning module and the others who had no experience
- Educators understand that they need to improve/learn skills in developing a CBL and express the desire to learn more.
- Some educators were able to articulate a definition of adult learners. However some didn't answer the specific question relating to this topic.
- Most educators were able to state some elements of best practices for an online module
- Educators identified that some of their challenges in creating online modules were to positively engage learners, and create a challenging online learning experience. In addition, they stated having issues with aligning training to the audience and also managing the length of a CBL.
- Online learning is one method of learning used in the healthcare industry because of its flexibility (education available 24/7). Educators want CBLS to challenge critical thinking and offer a more meaningful learning experience.
- Educators see some value in receiving education on creating higher quality CBLs. They will be able to develop courses that will better engage learners and ultimately improve patient care.
- Educators hope to learn new tools and methods to reach out their audience and make the course material more interactive and engaging.
- Finally, educators are most comfortable with face-to-face training. I believe that some elements that need to be covered will be better explored within the context of a class discussion. In addition, some educators expressed the needs to have hands-on experience.
